The Ateneo de Manila University community has expressed solidarity with Ateneo de Zamboanga University following the deadly shooting at its Junior High School campus in Zamboanga City.
In a statement, Ateneo de Manila condemned the violence and extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
“In moments of tragedy, the distance between our Ateneo communities disappears. Today, our thoughts are with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University community with the families and loved ones of those whose lives were lost,” the university said.
Ateneo de Manila described the incident as senseless violence, stressing that the loss of young lives is particularly distressing.
“Violence in any form is abhorrent, most especially when it results in the loss of young lives. We condemn, in no uncertain terms, the senseless violence that took the lives of members of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University community,” it said.
The university also expressed concern for those injured and their families, praying for the victims’ recovery as the AdZU community deals with the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We pray that the wounded recover quickly, and offer our solidarity with their family and friends as they seek to understand the horror that has befallen their loved ones,” the statement read.
Ateneo de Manila emphasized that schools must remain safe environments for students and questioned how young people are able to gain access to firearms and bring them into educational institutions.
“Our schools should be safe spaces for learners of all ages. We are perplexed and alarmed how young adults are able to access dangerous weapons and bring them to institutions meant for learning and growth,” the university said.
It called on authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the shooting to provide answers to the victims, their families and the wider school community.
“We call on the authorities to swiftly investigate the matter to give clarity to those victimized by armed violence,” it added.
The shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School left two students dead, according to initial police reports. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances and possible motive behind the incident.
Ateneo de Manila concluded its statement by reaffirming its solidarity with the Zamboanga community and invoking the shared identity of the Ateneo institutions.
“The entire Ateneo de Manila community stands in solidarity and prayer with our brothers and sisters in AdZU, as they mourn this tragic loss.”
“In this time of sorrow, we are One Ateneo — companions in mission, finding strength in our shared faith and hope in God’s abiding presence,” it said.
