The remains of student-athlete Divine Adili have been laid to rest in his hometown of Umueri, Nigeria, after being repatriated from the Philippines, his family confirmed.

Adili’s aunt, Nwozor-Mabia Ogonna Grace, shared an emotional message during the burial, expressing the family’s grief.

“We love you, son. Fly high. Our hearts still bleed, but we love you,” she wrote in a caption accompanying photos of the ceremony.

Adili’s remains were flown back to Nigeria from Manila following a series of tributes organized by Ateneo de Manila University, including a candlelight service, memorial masses and a public wake.

“It was a very big blow. So devastating. We lack words to express how sad the entire family felt about the news. It was very bad news,” Grace said in a separate statement.

She described Adili as “a very peaceful person,” adding that he was “very humble, God-fearing, and a very loving person.”

“Divine, wherever you are, we love you. You are forever in our hearts. We will never forget you,” Grace said.

Adili died alongside teammate Rene Baterbonia after they drowned during a team-building activity in the waters off Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8.

Baterbonia was laid to rest at Talacogon Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 24.

The deaths prompted an outpouring of grief from the university community and renewed calls for stricter safety measures in school-organized activities.
