The Assumption Student Council (ASC) has released an official statement expressing its position on a petition calling for the removal of Senator Loren Legarda’s portrait from the institution’s Wall of Empowered Women, citing issues of accountability, integrity, and alignment with the school’s core values.
In its statement, the ASC emphasized that while Legarda’s past contributions are recognized, her recent political actions were deemed by the council as no longer reflective of the values upheld by Assumption College.
“Recognition within our institution must reflect not only achievement but also character, responsibility, and moral courage,” the council said.
The student council linked its position to broader concerns about leadership and ethical conduct, stating that the Wall of Empowered Women should honor individuals whose actions consistently embody truth, justice, and public accountability.
The ASC also referenced recent national political developments, describing the current climate as a test of institutional values and public trust. It encouraged the community to remain vigilant and principled in evaluating public figures being honored within academic spaces.
“In view of this, the Council encourages the entire Assumption College community to support this petition,” the statement read, adding that such honors should be reserved for women who “continuously embody Assumption’s ideals in action and character.”
The council further called on Legarda to reflect on her public role, clarify her actions, and reaffirm her commitment to accountability and service, stating that it remains possible to rebuild public trust through renewed integrity and responsibility.
The ASC concluded that institutional recognition must remain consistent with the values it represents, stressing that only those who consistently uphold these principles should be included in the Wall of Empowered Women.
