Alex Eala and Shaira Hope Rivera opened their women’s doubles campaign at the 20th Asian Games with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hong Kong’s Ching Laam Lai and Kallista Liu on Tuesday, advancing to the Round of 16.

It only took 33 minutes for the Filipina duo to take the opening set, combining well at the net and capitalizing on their opponents’ errors to build an early lead.

Lai and Liu attempted to rally in the second set but struggled to contain the Filipinas, who maintained their composure to close out the match in straight sets.

Eala and Rivera will next face third seeds Xinyu Jiang and Zhaoxuan Yang of China in the second round on Wednesday.

Yang reached the doubles quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open, while Jiang advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of this year’s US Open.

The doubles match is scheduled to be played outdoors on the Show Court after Eala’s women’s singles quarterfinal against Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei.

The victory marked Eala’s second win in Nagoya after she opened her singles campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Philippines will look to extend its run in the women’s doubles competition as Eala and Rivera continue their Asian Games campaign.
