Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Atty. Ronel Buenaventura testified Tuesday that the agency has no record showing that China, as a country, funneled funds to Cale88 Foods Corp., during Day 34 of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.
Buenaventura made the statement during cross-examination by defense counsel Atty. Mark Vinluan, who questioned him about China-based entities mentioned in transactions involving Cale88.
Vinluan asked whether AMLC records showed that the China-based entities cited in the transactions were not legitimate business entities.
“No, Your Honor. There’s nothing in the records,” Buenaventura replied.
Vinluan also asked Buenaventura to confirm that Cale88 Foods Corp. has a separate and distinct legal personality from natural persons.
“From my limited knowledge of corporation law, yes, Your Honor,” Buenaventura said.
When asked whether those natural persons included attorney Mans Carpio – husband of the vice president – Buenaventura said he was unsure whether Carpio was a stockholder of Cale88.
Vinluan then pointed out that AMLC records showed the remittances were made to Cale88 Foods Corp., rather than directly to Duterte or Carpio.
“That is correct, based on records, Your Honor,” Buenaventura said.
Vinluan further asked whether the AMLC had any record showing how much of Cale88’s transactions ultimately benefited Duterte or Carpio.
“Redounded to the benefit, Your Honor, there is... none. There is none. It’s only based on what we have on the records,” Buenaventura replied.
The testimony came as the defense continued its cross-examination of Buenaventura over financial transactions and entities cited in the impeachment proceedings against Duterte.
