Alex Eala's Canadian title run came to an end Monday at the WTA1000 National Bank Open after she fell to Belinda Bencic, 6-4, 6-0, in the Round of 16 in Toronto.

Eala started strongly, holding serve to love in the opening game, but Bencic quickly settled into the match and took control with her aggressive baseline play and consistent serving.

The first set featured five breaks of serve as both players traded momentum. Eala broke back to level the set at 2-2 and again drew even at 4-4 after Bencic committed a double fault.

Bencic, however, reclaimed the advantage by breaking Eala at 5-4 before serving out the set, 6-4.

The Swiss player dominated the second set, breaking Eala in the opening game and building a 3-0 lead. Bencic continued to pressure Eala, who struggled to find a response as the match slipped away.

Bencic broke again to move ahead 4-0 and held serve for a 5-0 advantage.

Eala fought to extend the match, saving two match points and forcing a deuce in the final game. But Bencic earned another match point and closed out the victory on her next opportunity.

With the win, Bencic advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face American Coco Gauff.

Despite the loss, Eala's run in Toronto follows a breakthrough stretch that saw her capture her first WTA 500 title at the Mubadala Citi DC Open earlier this month and rise to a career-high No. 20 in the WTA rankings.
