Alex Eala soared to a new career-high ranking of No. 20 in the latest WTA standings after capturing the Mubadala DC Open title, becoming the first Filipina to break into the Top 20.

The 21-year-old jumped eight spots from No. 28 following a breakthrough run in Washington, where she defeated a string of top-tier opponents en route to the biggest title of her career.

Eala capped her campaign with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final on Monday (Tuesday, Philippine time), showcasing resilience after dropping the opening set and dominating the decider.

Her title run featured wins over some of the biggest names in women’s tennis, including Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and Pegula.

The victory marked Eala’s first WTA 500 title and underscored her rapid rise on the professional circuit, as she continues to establish herself among the sport’s elite.

Eala’s latest achievement adds another milestone to Philippine tennis, with the young star now firmly positioned inside the Top 20 for the first time in her career.
