At least 18 areas in the country may reach dangerous levels of heat index on Wednesday, May 8, according to the state weather bureau PAGASA.
Based on its latest advisory, PAGASA said the following areas may experience heat indexes ranging from 42°C to 45°C today:

- Cuyo, Palawan

- Dagupan City, Pangasinan
- Bacnotan, La Union

- San Jose, Occidental Mindoro
- Masbate City, Masbate
- Iloilo City, Iloilo
- Dumangas, Iloilo
- Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Del Sur
42°C
- CLSU Muñoz, Nueva Ecija
- Legazpi City, Albay
- CBSUA-Pili, Camarines Sur
- Cotabato City, Maguindanao
- Puerto Princesa City, Palawan
Meanwhile, those residing in Metro Manila were expected to experience a heat index of 41°C on Wednesday, which is at the "extreme caution" level.
The heat index is the human discomfort index that gives the "apparent" temperature, or what humans perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body.
The effect-based danger classification ranges from 42°C to 51°C, and its effects on the body are that heat cramps and exhaustion are likely, and heat stroke is probable with continued exposure.
Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include sweating heavily, exhaustion or fatigue, dizziness, blacking out, weak but fast pulse, nausea, and vomiting.
