A former delivery rider and student proved that determination can overcome limitations after breaking the nearly two-decade national record in the Men’s Elite Sprint at the Asian Cycling Confederation Track Championships using a bike he once used for food deliveries.
At just 21 years old, Zedric Honorica shared that despite the pressure of chasing the record, he remained focused on his goal.
“Target namin sana, so parang kung hindi man kami mag-qualify ni Kuya Luke, yung kasama ko po… yung isang Philippine team rin, na hindi man kami makapag-qualify, at least ma-beat lang namin yung national record,” he shared.
He clocked an impressive 10.865 seconds and made history for Philippine cycling.
His inspiring journey showed the importance of perseverance and resourcefulness, as he revealed that he trained while balancing school, delivery work, and self-training.
"Noong una po talaga, ginagamit ko po siya pang-delivery, and then noong time na may nakakasama na ako mga kaibigan ko na mga naglalaro na gamit yung mga bikes na ganito, then na-influence po nila na baguhin ko yung bike ko… and then napalitan ko po siya para maging isang racing bike po,” he shared.
Honorica also highlighted the need for stronger support for Filipino cyclists so athletes like him could achieve even greater success and further elevate Philippine cycling on the international stage.
He emphasized, “Kung nabigyan lang po sana kami ng mas maayos na suporta and then mas maayos na equipment… parang feel ko, mas kaya ko pang babaan yung time ko and then at the same time makapag-qualify po.”
Through his story, Honorica hopes to inspire young Filipinos to continue pursuing their dreams no matter how difficult the journey may be, reminding them to continue striving for their aspirations while believing, working hard, and praying through every challenge.
