The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co is believed to be in Paris based on information from a “reliable diplomatic source,” although his presence in France has yet to be physically confirmed.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro disclosed the information during the Manila Overseas Press Club DFA Night in Makati City, noting that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

According to the DFA, Co was earlier reported to have left the Czech Republic and traveled to France, where he is allegedly seeking political asylum. Lazaro did not provide details on the reported asylum request, citing the sensitivity of the issue, particularly under European legal frameworks.

The department said it is continuing to take appropriate actions in accordance with Philippine laws.

The DFA also confirmed that Co’s diplomatic passport had been canceled in December last year following an order from the Sandiganbayan. His regular passport expired in 2022.

Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. held separate meetings in Malacañang with Czech Embassy Charge d’Affaires Eva Tenzin and French Ambassador to the Philippines Marie Fontanel.

Both diplomatic officials have conveyed their governments’ willingness to cooperate with Philippine authorities on the matter, in accordance with their respective laws.
