In a stunning display of skill and composure, Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala and American partner Iva Jovic toppled tennis veterans Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7), 6-1 in the doubles opening round of the ASB Classic on Monday.

The young pair weathered a tense first set against the experienced duo, who fought back from an early 0-2 deficit to take a 4-2 lead. Eala and Jovic refused to buckle, rallying to force a tiebreak and overcoming a 5-6 setback to claim the set.

That momentum carried into the second, where the rising stars raced to a 4-1 lead and never looked back, closing the match in just under an hour and a half.

While Williams, 45, boasts 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and Svitolina has two career doubles crowns, the youth and composure of Eala and Jovic proved unstoppable. Their teamwork and fearless shot-making caught the seasoned pair off guard, producing one of the tournament’s biggest early upsets.

With the win, the duo advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the match between top seeds Asia Muhammad and Erin Routliffe and the pairing of Jesika Malekova and Renata Zarazua.

Eala will shift her focus to singles on Tuesday, taking on two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Donna Vekic at 3:10 p.m. in her first tournament of the season, which also serves as a warm-up for her Australian Open main-draw debut.

Monday’s triumph signals a coming-of-age for the young players, proving that experience may open doors—but confidence and composure can rewrite expectations.
