The Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert again from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, due to high power demand and the continued unavailability of several major coal-fired power plants, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
In an advisory, NGCP showed that the available capacity for the Visayas grid stood at 2,552 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was projected to reach 2,392MW.
The grid operator said a total of 985.5MW remains unavailable to the grid as several power plants continue to experience outages and derated operations.
According to NGCP, 10 power plants have been on forced outage since June 2026, while nine plants have remained on forced outage since May 2026. One plant has been unavailable since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021.
In addition, nine power plants are currently operating at derated capacities.
Among the major coal plants unavailable in the Visayas were TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2, which NGCP cited as among the main factors behind the yellow alert declaration.
“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” NGCP said.
