The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert on Friday, June 5, due to high electricity demand and the continued unavailability of several major power plants.
In an advisory, the NGCP said the three-hour yellow alert would be in effect from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Earlier, the yellow alert was scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“The extended yellow alert is due to the increase in forecasted demand by 64 megawatts (MW),” the NGCP said.
The Visayas grid had an available capacity of 2,628MW, while peak demand was projected to reach 2,447MW during the alert period.
According to the NGCP, a total of 911.2MW remained unavailable to the grid as several power plants continued to experience outages and operational limitations.
Three plants were on forced outage in June 2026, while eight had been unavailable since May 2026. One plant had been offline since March 2026, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
In addition, 12 power plants were operating at derated capacities.
The NGCP said the declaration of a yellow alert was prompted by the high system demand forecast and the unavailability of major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, including TVI Units 1 and 2, and PEDC Unit 3.
“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” he said.
