Actress and beauty queen Winwyn Marquez gave her national costume for Miss Universe Philippines a dark twist, to honor both her mother’s legacy and the industry of Filipino film.
The Muntinlupa City bet stunned in an aswang-themed look inspired by the 1992 horror flick “Aswang” headlined by her mother, veteran actress Alma Moreno.
“This costume, in collaboration with Obra Grandiosa by Bryan Diego, is inspired by the 1992 (Regal Entertainment) film Aswang.. where my mother, Alma Moreno, played the lead role while pregnant with me,” Winwyn shared on Instagram.
The ensemble highlights a horned, demoniac likeness with a snaking, tubular tongue, unfurled from behind a cracked, gleeful smile. The figure is swathed in delicate tulle, dripping with vivid red rhinestones, appearing to hover behind Winwyn—dressed in similar apparel—evoking a shadow or alter-ego.
“It was designed to reflect the aswang as a terrifying shape-shifter.. graceful and elegant at first glance, but deceptive and fearsome underneath. The look begins with a nod to the classic Filipiniana, then transforms into something darker and more sinister,” Winwyn added.
The costume was crafted with rhinestones, acrylic beads, teardrops, embroidery laces, 3D patterns, and spray paints.

The charity gala night and national costume showcase took place in Okada Manila yesterday evening.
Earlier, Winwyn earned nine special awards from Miss Universe Philippines sponsors in the pageant’s preliminary competition.
The crown will be passed on from reigning queen Chelsea Manalo during the finals night on Friday, May 2.
