A very weak phreatic eruption was recorded at the main crater of Taal Volcano early Monday morning, April 6, 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said the eruption occurred at 3:08 a.m. and lasted for approximately two minutes, based on seismic and camera records monitoring the volcano’s activity.

Thermal cameras stationed at Daang Kastila (VTDK) and the Main Crater (VTMC) detected a plume that rose about 200 meters above the crater lake during the event. The eruption was classified as a very weak phreatic eruption, or a steam-driven explosion caused by the heating of water beneath the volcano.

Despite the activity, Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Taal Volcano, indicating low-level unrest.

Based on PHIVOLCS’ 24-hour monitoring report dated April 6, the volcano recorded nine volcanic earthquakes, including seven volcanic tremors lasting one to two minutes.

The agency also noted weak plume emission and ongoing ground deformation at Taal Volcano Island, suggesting continued volcanic processes beneath the edifice.

Other monitored parameters showed elevated volcanic gas emission, with sulfur dioxide flux measured at 1,097 tonnes per day as of April 2.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, remains strictly prohibited due to potential hazards. The agency also advised against flying aircraft close to the volcano’s summit.

Authorities warned that sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and the accumulation or release of volcanic gases may still occur without warning.

Phivolcs also urged residents living around Taal Lake to stay alert and follow official advisories.
