Consumers may face higher water bills starting in 2026 as the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) confirmed that Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc. have proposed adjustments in their water rates.
According to MWSS, the proposed increases are part of the periodic rate rebasing and are intended to help cover operational costs, infrastructure upgrades, debt servicing, and the expansion of water and sewerage services. However, the proposals are still subject to regulatory review, public consultations, and final approval.
The MWSS assured the public that any approved rate adjustment will undergo a thorough evaluation to balance the financial sustainability of the concessionaires and the protection of consumers. Public hearings are expected before any increase takes effect, allowing customers to air concerns.
Both water firms serve millions of households in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, making the proposed adjustments a significant issue for consumers as the country enters 2026.
