Vice President Sara Duterte on Thursday called on Filipinos to uphold national sovereignty and remain steadfast in defending the country’s independence and justice system, as the nation marked the 84th commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan.

In her official message, Duterte honored the bravery and sacrifice of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during the Fall of Bataan, describing their heroism as a lasting symbol of patriotism.

“Kaisa ko ang buong bansa sa paggunita ng Araw ng Kagitingan. Ngayong araw, binibigyang-pugay natin ang mga magigiting na kawal na nanindigan sa Bataan. Ang kanilang sakripisyo ay isang dakilang pagpapatunay ng pagmamahal sa bayan,” the Vice President said in a video message.

“The Day Of Valor reminds us that our freedom was bought at a high price. It is a reminder that the defense of our Republic is the continuous duty that falls upon every generation,” she said.

Duterte emphasized that courage in modern times is reflected not only in acts of war but in the nation’s collective resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and uphold the rule of law.

“Today, valor is found in our courage to protect our sovereignty and our discipline to uphold the rule of law,” she said.

She stressed that true valor lies in the firm resolve to “protect our sovereignty,” warning that any attempt by foreign institutions to interfere in the country’s justice system constitutes a direct challenge to the freedom fought for by Filipino heroes in Bataan.

“Ang anumang pagtatangka ng mga banyagang institusyon na manghimasok sa ating hustisya ay siyang tuwirang hamon sa kalayaang ipinaglaban ng ating mga bayani sa Bataan,” Duterte added.

The Vice President also underscored the capability of Filipinos to govern themselves and enforce their own laws through independent institutions.

Duterte urged the public to face present-day challenges with resilience and determination, echoing the spirit of the soldiers who stood their ground in Bataan.
