Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday, August 18, dismissed reports regarding her supposed trip to Japan, stating that disclosing her schedule is “a matter of serious concern” as it poses security risks.

In a statement, the vice president said that her plans have since changed, adding that her office has submitted the updated information to the Office of the President. She also reminded media organizations and news outlets of the importance of verifying information before publication.

“The rush to generate public attention or sensationalize a story should never take precedence over the responsibility to report truthfully and accurately,” she wrote.

Duterte said that such practices are inconsistent with the principles of responsible journalism, stating, “A simple verification with the Office of the Vice President would have been the rule of thumb for professional media organizations.”

The vice president was supposed to travel to Japan from August 19 to 24, 2026. Based on the document provided by Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, Duterte was granted travel authority, and the letter was signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on August 17.

Subsequently, the OVP submitted another letter informing the office of the cancellation of her foreign travel.

In response, the Palace said that there is “nothing wrong” with disclosing the travel authority granted to her.

“Filipino people deserve to know where the public funds go,” the Palace said, adding that P7 million was spent for Duterte’s security and staff for her foreign trips.
