The defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte said Monday it was prepared to address the prosecution’s allegations concerning her alleged unexplained wealth and business interests following the 27th day of her impeachment trial.
Atty. Michael Poa, spokesperson for Duterte’s defense team, made the statement during a press conference after Monday’s proceedings, which focused on Article II of the Articles of Impeachment.
The article covers allegations involving Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth, false statements in her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth, or SALNs, and continued business interests.
Poa said much of Monday’s proceedings involved the prosecution having its witness identify documents, which contributed to the length of the hearing.
He said the defense did not object to the prosecution’s proposal to stipulate that the documents were certified true copies in the custody of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
“To be fair to the prosecution, maaaring pagdating ng turn ng defense, we will have to do something similar,” Poa said.
Poa said both sides appeared willing to expedite the proceedings because they expected the identification of the documents to take time.
He also urged the public to wait for the defense to present its evidence before drawing conclusions on the allegations raised during the trial.
“Tandaan lang natin na prosecution pa ang ang nagpipresenta ng evidence,” Poa said. “But let’s also wait for the turn of the defense to present our evidence because we’re ready to confront all these things.”
The prosecution presented Securities and Exchange Commission Company Registration and Monitoring Department Director Gerardo del Rosario as a witness to authenticate SEC records involving business interests.
The Senate impeachment court also excluded two firms from the SEC witness’ testimony.
The allegations under Article II involve Duterte and her husband, Mans Carpio.
