Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday expressed deep dismay over what she described as the “inhumane” treatment of her father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, while under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands.

In a statement released by the Office of the Vice President (OVP), the Vice President voiced concern over her father’s welfare, stressing that even the most basic medical care had not been provided to the former president after "credible information" revealed he was found unconscious in his room.

"Credible information received by the family from hospital sources reveals that Former President Duterte had to be subjected to laboratory tests after being found unconscious on the floor of his room," the OVP said.

However, the family claimed they were not immediately informed of the "accident and no explanation was given."

“The continued detention of Former President Duterte under such troubling conditions is not only unjust but inhumane,” the Vice President said.

The Vice President lamented that the ICC has failed to assign a 24-hour bedside caregiver despite Duterte’s advanced age and frail condition.

She underscored that the absence of proper care amounts to punishment despite Duterte not being convicted of any crime.

She also questioned the so-called “welfare checks” conducted on her father, saying these were intrusive and done without proper transparency.

"This is nothing less than an abuse of power against a vulnerable individual," she said.

VP Sara called on the ICC to rectify what she described as a gross injustice and to extend "humanitarian considerations" to the former president, who she stressed is not a flight risk, has never threatened witnesses, and has no intention of returning to public office.
