Vice President Sara Duterte has called on local government units (LGUs) to permanently ban motorcades and vehicle caravans, saying these activities contribute to rising fuel consumption, air and noise pollution, and traffic congestion.
In a public statement released on Tuesday, March 3, Duterte appealed for more environmentally responsible and less disruptive forms of public assembly. “Due to the recent rise in fuel prices and the serious concerns about air and noise pollution, I am appealing to people to reconsider organizing motorcades and vehicle caravans/parades as a form of protest,” she said.
The Vice President acknowledged the public’s right to express dissent or show political support, including backing for former President Rodrigo Duterte, but stressed the need to weigh the broader impact of such activities. “While I fully understand the desire to gather and express anger against the administration or show support to former President Rodrigo Duterte, it is, however, more important to be mindful of how these activities impact others and the environment,” she stated.
Duterte noted that motorcades not only increase fuel expenses but also worsen traffic congestion, adding inconvenience to commuters and businesses. She also raised concerns about economic challenges facing Filipinos, including job losses among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and the rising cost of food and essential commodities.
“I call on all Local Government Units (LGUs) to permanently ban motorcades and vehicle caravans/parade whether for celebrations, festivals, or political intent,” Duterte said, urging communities to adopt alternative ways of gathering that are “less disruptive and more sustainable.”
The statement comes amid heightened political activities and public demonstrations across parts of the country, as well as continued discussions on environmental protection and economic recovery.
