Vice President Sara Duterte said a “Free Duterte Now” rally will be held on July 29 in front of the International Criminal Court (ICC), aimed at protesting what she described as injustice against former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In an interview with online content creator Alvin & Tourism on Monday following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Duterte said supporters plan to gather to air their grievances over the case involving her father.

“Meron tayong rally sa Wednesday, July 29 sa harap ng ICC. And this is a “Free Duterte Now” rally,” she said.

Duterte said she informed the former president about the planned demonstration but cautioned him that such actions might not help his case.

“Sinabi ko sa kanya [Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte] na, I do not think this will help your case since from previous rallies, napapansin namin na kinukuha ng ICC yung mga sinasabi natin at ginagawa nilang basehan sa kanilang mga desisyon,” she said.

According to the vice president, Rodrigo Duterte initially questioned the purpose of the rally.

“And then he [Rodrigo Duterte] said na, bakit pa kayo mag-rally? What for? Sabi ko, para lang malabas namin yung galit namin at marinig ng buong mundo yung galit ng mga Pilipino sa ginawa sa iyo,” she added.

Duterte said the former president eventually left the decision to his supporters.

The ICC has been investigating alleged crimes linked to Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign during his presidency, which has drawn international scrutiny.

Further details about the rally, including expected turnout and security preparations, have yet to be announced.
