The Catholic Church in the Philippines continues to face a growing concern over the declining number of priests despite the increasing number of faithful devotees.
In an exclusive interview on Point of View, Reverend Father Randy De Jesus, Executive Secretary of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Vocations, said this situation should be seen not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity.
He emphasized that every crisis in vocation highlights the need to deepen the understanding of God’s call.
He explained that vocation is not limited to priesthood, but includes different paths such as marriage, single blessedness, and religious life. According to him, all these states of life are part of God’s invitation for people to live in holiness.
Rev. Fr. De Jesus also stressed the importance of encouraging young people to discern their calling despite modern challenges such as financial difficulties and social pressures. He noted that seminarian formation is long and demanding, but necessary to prepare future priests for service.
In conclusion, he encouraged continuous prayer and support for vocations in the Church. He said that even in times of shortage, faith and trust in God remain the foundation for strengthening the Church’s mission.
