The Visayas power grid has been placed on yellow alert again on Friday, July 17, due to the unavailability of large coal plants and a forecast of high electricity demand.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the yellow alert will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

According to NGCP, the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,725 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is forecast at 2,495 MW.

The grid operator said seven power plants are currently on forced outage. These include seven plants that went offline in July 2026, four since June, seven since May, one since March, three since 2025, three since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

Meanwhile, 17 other power plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 795.1 MW of unavailable capacity in the grid.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," said NGCP.
