The Visayas power grid will again be placed under red and yellow alert on Friday, Aug. 7, due to tight power supply conditions, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

In an advisory, NGCP said a red alert will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., while a yellow alert will be raised from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A red alert is declared when available power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the grid’s regulating requirements, while a yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is not enough to cover contingency requirements.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the Visayas grid had an available capacity of 2,360 megawatts against a peak demand of 2,348 megawatts.

NGCP said a total of 1,116.1 MW is unavailable to the grid due to outages and derated power plants.

At least seven plants are on forced outage in August, with others remaining offline since previous months, including three plants since July, three since June, seven since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

In addition, 12 power plants are operating at reduced capacity.

Among the factors cited for the alert status are the unavailability of major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, including TVI Units 1 and 2, KSPC Unit 1, CEDC Unit 1, and TPC Coal.

NGCP also noted limited power imports from Mindanao due to the extended outage of SEC Unit 2 and the planned outage of STEAG Unit 2.

The grid operator urged consumers to practice energy conservation to help maintain system stability during peak hours.
