The Visayas Grid will be under yellow alert from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, due to limited power supply, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
In its 10 a.m. update, NGCP said the grid has an available capacity of 2,519 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,342 MW during the alert period.
NGCP said 10 power plants are on forced outage in September, while other generating units have remained unavailable since previous months and years. Another 17 plants are operating at reduced or derated capacities, resulting in a total of 974.4 MW of unavailable capacity.
The grid operator identified the unavailability of major Visayas coal plants as one of the factors behind the yellow alert. These include Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) Unit 3, Kepco SPC Power Corp. (KSPC) Unit 2, and Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) Unit 1.
NGCP said TVI Unit 1 returned online on September 26 at 4:38 p.m. but shut down again early Sunday at 4:34 a.m.
Another factor was the deration of Leyte-A following the tripping of several generating units.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin of the power grid is insufficient to meet the required contingency reserve. It does not necessarily mean that power interruptions are occurring, but indicates tighter supply conditions and reduced reserve margins.
The latest alert comes amid recurring supply concerns in the Visayas. The Department of Energy earlier said the region had experienced repeated yellow and red alerts since May 2026 because of simultaneous outages at several major generating facilities.
NGCP, which operates the country's transmission system, said the Visayas Grid covers the interconnected island grids of Cebu, Negros, Panay, Leyte, Samar and Bohol and accounts for about 14% of the country's total power demand.
Earlier this week, the Visayas Grid was also placed under a yellow alert due to the unavailability of several power plants and reduced generating capacity.
