The Visayas Grid will be placed under yellow alert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, due to limited power reserves, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
As of 8 a.m., the Visayas Grid had an available capacity of 2,505 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,290 MW.
NGCP said several power plants remain unavailable or are operating at reduced capacity. A total of 12 plants are on forced outage, while 14 plants are operating on derated capacities, resulting in a combined 820.6 MW of unavailable capacity.
Factors contributing to the yellow alert declaration include the unavailability of the Visayas' large coal-fired power plants TVI 1 and PEDC 3, as well as limited power imports from the Mindanao Grid.
NGCP said a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
The grid operator continues to monitor the power situation in the Visayas and may issue further updates as conditions change.
