The Visayas power grid will be placed under a yellow alert for four hours on Friday, August 21, due to thin power reserves caused by the unavailability of several power plants, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
In an advisory, The NGCP said the yellow alert will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with an available capacity of 2,584 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,444 MW.
The NGCP attributed the alert to the following factors:
- Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1 and TVI 2
As of August, seven power plants were on forced outage, while 14 others were operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 797.6 MW of capacity unavailable to the grid.
Of the plants on forced outage, one has been unavailable since July, three since June, seven since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
NGCP said a yellow alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
