The Visayas Grid has been placed under Yellow Alert on Sunday, August 23, due to insufficient operating margin to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The Yellow Alert will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
As of 8 a.m. Sunday, the Visayas Grid had an available capacity of 2,516 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,292 MW.
NGCP said eight power plants were on forced outage in August, while other plants had been unavailable since July, June, May, March, and previous years. Nine plants were also operating at derated capacities.
In total, 901.9 MW of capacity was unavailable to the grid.
Among the factors that contributed to the Yellow Alert were the unavailability of the Visayas’ large coal-fired power plants TVI 1 and TVI 2.
NGCP also cited the emergency shutdown of KSPC 1 at 9:42 p.m. on August 22 due to a suspected boiler tube leak.
A Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
