The Visayas power grid was placed under Yellow Alert status on Thursday evening due to insufficient operating reserves caused by multiple power plant outages and high electricity demand.

According to the latest grid advisory issued at 6:00 p.m. on June 4, the Yellow Alert was in effect from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The grid recorded an available capacity of 2,606 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,411MW.

Grid operators reported that several power plants remain unavailable due to forced outages and derated operations. A total of four plants experienced forced outages in June 2026, while additional plants have remained offline since previous months and years, including eight since May 2026, one since March 2026, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

Meanwhile, 16 power plants are currently operating at reduced or derated capacities, resulting in a combined 931.3MW unavailable to the Visayas grid.

Authorities identified the unavailability of major coal-fired power plants, including TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3, as among the primary reasons behind the alert status, along with the high forecasted system demand.

A Yellow Alert is declared when the operating margin falls below the required contingency level needed to maintain grid stability and respond to sudden power supply disruptions.
