The Visayas Grid is set to be placed under Red Alert and Yellow Alert on Thursday, September 24, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The Visayas Grid will be under Red Alert from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., while Yellow Alert will be in effect from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The grid has an available capacity of 2,292 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,495 MW.
The NGCP said 17 power plants are on forced outage, while another 17 plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 949.9 MW of unavailable capacity.
The forced outages include 17 plants that went offline in September, three since August, two since June, six since May, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
Among the factors contributing to the Red and Yellow Alert declarations are the unavailability of the Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2.
The temporary unavailability of power imports from Luzon also contributed to the alerts due to the requested emergency shutdown of the Tabango-Kananga 230-kilovolt (kV) Line 2 to allow a customer to undertake emergency repairs on defective equipment.
A Red Alert is issued when available power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
