The Visayas grid will again be placed under yellow alert on Saturday, May 30, due to thin power supply, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The grid’s available capacity was recorded at 2,581 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,454 MW. Meanwhile, a total of 961.5 MW remains unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said 13 power plants have been on forced outage since May 2026, one plant since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021. In addition, 12 plants are operating on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 961.5 MW unavailable to the grid.

Among the factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration were the unavailability of major Visayas coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2, as well as a high system demand forecast.

Meanwhile, the Department of Energy (DOE) said it is actively coordinating with the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP), NGCP, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), generation companies, and industry stakeholders to expedite the safe restoration of affected facilities and implement all available measures to stabilize the grid and protect consumers.

“The DOE continues to closely monitor the grid and provide the public with information as the situation develops,” the agency said.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
