The Visayas region may experience thin electricity reserves in the upcoming summer months due to ongoing repairs and maintenance of several power plants, the Department of Energy (DOE) warned.
In an ambush interview, Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin explained that high electricity demand in the Visayas is a key factor contributing to the tight supply. While the national average increase in demand is 5–6 percent, Iloilo alone has seen a 14-percent rise, reflecting the region’s rapid economic growth.
Garin also cited aging coal-fired power plants that require repair or replacement as another factor affecting supply.
Despite these challenges, Garin assured the public that the DOE is monitoring the situation closely and implementing solutions. She said, “Energy outlook is good naman in general, except that, Visayas, we have to be very careful, we're watching Visayas very well… we need to unplug kung di naman ginagamit, kailangan yung aircon di sobrang lamig, patayin yung electric fan kung walang tao…”
Outside the Visayas, Secretary Garin said the energy outlook remains stable in other regions, with safeguards in place to prevent supply disruptions during the peak summer season.
