Sen. Joel Villanueva said the impeachment court needs to trace the source of funds used to acquire properties linked to Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, as the Senate impeachment trial entered its 32nd day on Thursday.

Villanueva made the statement after Marco Pineda, deputy register of deeds III of the City of Samal, presented his testimony and underwent defense cross-examination.

Pineda was subpoenaed to testify about a property in the Island Garden City of Samal registered in Carpio’s name.

“Let me just put into the records as mentioned earlier that this court needs evidence, tracing who actually paid for these properties and where these funds came from,” Villanueva said.

He said the court should obtain the seller’s payment records, loan disbursement records if loans are being relied upon, and Anti-Money Laundering Council records specifically linked to the property acquisition.

“This will help definitely establish how this transaction supports the allegations under Article II (Unexplained Wealth),” Villanueva said.

His remarks came as the prosecution presented evidence related to its allegation of unexplained wealth against Duterte under Article II of the impeachment complaint.
