Veteran goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an 18-year career with the Philippine national team.
Etheridge made the announcement Monday through an emotional Instagram post, reflecting on nearly two decades of representing the country.
“Love & heartbreak. Passion & desire. I never stopped caring, I always gave everything for the team and the country,” Etheridge wrote.
“At the age of 18, I made my decision to play for the Philippines… I don’t regret any of my decisions.”
One of the most recognizable figures in Philippine football, Etheridge played a key role during a transformative period for the national team, popularly known as the Azkals. He was instrumental in helping the Philippines reach the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 2019 — a historic milestone for the program.
Etheridge also highlighted his groundbreaking achievement as the first Filipino player to compete in the English Premier League, a feat that elevated the profile of Filipino football on the global stage.
“I made some amazing friends along the way and met some great people. Memories that will last with me forever,” he said. “Thank you to all the supporters who have been along with me on the journey.”
During his international career, Etheridge helped steer the Philippines to a runner-up finish in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup and a third-place finish in 2012, further cementing his legacy as one of the country’s all-time greats.
He also acknowledged the challenges and sacrifices that came with representing the national team, noting that some experiences could only be understood by his teammates.
“All I wanted from the beginning was to make a difference and I hope that I was able to achieve that with my service to the country and national team,” Etheridge said.
Closing his message, Etheridge expressed optimism for the future of Philippine football and the next generation of players.
“On that note, this is my official retirement from international duty,” he said. “I wish nothing but success for the next generation of Filipino footballers across the world.”
Etheridge departs as one of the most influential players in Philippine football history, leaving a legacy defined by leadership, resilience and historic achievements on and off the pitch.
