The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) has expressed grief over the deaths of its student, Maureen Keil Santuyo, and University of the Philippines Diliman student Alyssa Alano, who were killed during a recent military encounter in Negros Occidental.

In an official statement, the university described Santuyo, an Associate of Arts student, as a compassionate youth advocate dedicated to supporting marginalized agrarian communities. UPOU extended its condolences to the families of the victims and honored their commitment to social causes.

The institution also raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident, calling for a transparent and thorough investigation. It emphasized the need for full accountability should any human rights violations be established.

UPOU further urged the public to exercise restraint in discussions about the case, warning against the spread of unverified accusations and the labeling of members of the academic community without evidence.

Highlighting broader social issues linked to the incident, the university pointed to longstanding agrarian concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to accessible education and critical engagement with societal issues. It stressed its role in empowering disadvantaged sectors through learning and civic participation.

Amid the tragedy, UPOU called for compassion and unity, urging stakeholders to seek the truth, uphold accountability, and work toward a just and lasting peace.
