The United People’s Initiative (UPI) and others filed a petition before the Supreme Court, seeking transparency about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health, according to a Tuesday report.
The Petition for Mandamus was filed against the Office of the Executive Secretary and other officials of the Malacañang, reported RH 29 Boy Gonzales.
In their petition, the UPI and others urged for the Palace's adherence to Section 12, Article VII of the 1987 Constitution, which provides that the public must be informed when the President is suffering from a serious illness.
The petitioners stressed that the President’s health was a matter of “serious public concern,” hence their appeal for access to accurate and timely information regarding Marcos’ physical and mental conditions.
They called on Palace officials to provide comprehensive reports about Marcos’ condition through a periodic medical bulletin. Moreover, they asserted that the declaration of a national state of energy emergency calls for heightened transparency, considering that the executive branch is granted more power during such crises.
Public statements, observations, and media reports must be considered sufficient basis to issue detailed information, the petitioners argued, adding that waiting for “absolute proof” of illness was unnecessary.
Furthermore, they stressed that public trust relies on the assurance that the government’s decisions come directly from President Marcos, and not from other individuals or groups.
The Palace has repeatedly denied reports of President Marcos’ poor health, dismissing them as efforts to destabilize the government and to divert public attention from the energy emergency.
