

MANILA, Philippines – The United Nations (UN) in the Philippines extended its message of sympathy to the victims and those affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao early Monday morning.
In a statement, the UN expressed sadness after government officials reported that 19 people were dead, while 147 individuals were hurt due to the earthquake.
“The United Nations in the Philippines extends its deepest sympathies to the people of Mindanao and other affected areas following the devastating earthquake on 8 June,” the statement read.
“We mourn the loss of lives and the suffering endured by families and communities due to widespread damage to homes and infrastructure and we stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time,” it added.
The UN is now assessing the earthquake’s impact, while remaining ready to support response and recovery efforts.

The UN also commended the search and rescue personnel for their bravery and dedication to save lives and provide relief.
“The United Nations commends national and local authorities for their swift response. Together with the government and partners, we are assessing the earthquake’s impact and remain ready to support response and recovery efforts,” the United Nations mentioned.
“We commend the courage and dedication of first responders, medical personnel, and volunteers who are working tirelessly to save lives and provide relief,” the UN added.
The United Nations also reaffirmed its commitment to help build back communities affected by the earthquake.
“In moments of crisis, unity and compassion are our greatest strengths. The United Nations reaffirms its commitment to help build back stronger, safer, and even more resilient communities,” the statement read.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in an interview with DZRH Balansyado, said that areas heavily affected by the earthquake are General Santos City, Saranggani, Davao Occidental and coastal areas of Sultan Kudarat.
