Around 339 students were left stranded at Masbate State University following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Opong, according to Dr. Arnel Millesca, President of Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa, Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT).
“Meron kaming stranded ditong mga estudyante na nasa 339 na students,” said Millesca in an exclusive interview with DZRH’s Special on Saturday.
The DEBESMSCAT President explained that many students were unable to return home, as their families' houses were also damaged or destroyed by the storm. He added that transportation has also become a major concern, especially for those living in remote towns.
As a result, the stranded students have remained in their respective boarding rooms inside the campus. Millesca noted that most of them come from far-flung areas severely affected by the storm.
“Yung parent na mismo, before na maputol ang signal ay nakapag-contact na sila sa kanilang mga anak na mag-stay na lang muna sila dito,” he said, recounting how some parents were able to reach their children before communication lines were cut off.
Students and faculty continue to face challenges due to the lack of electricity, connection, and transportation. Without power or access to printing facilities, the school has been unable to produce and distribute learning modules and other educational materials.
To cope, Millesca said that the university has decided to adjust class schedules starting Monday, October 6, and will implement make-up classes to prevent students from falling behind in all subject areas.
Furthermore, relief goods, including food and other essentials, have been provided by various donors. Millesca also confirmed that the institution has received assistance from the government.
