Typhoon Domeng slightly decelerated while maintaining its strength early Monday, June 1 as it continued moving northward and prepared to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said typhoon Domeng (international name: Jangmi) was last located about 655 kilometers east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph.
Domeng is moving north-northwestward at 15 kph and is expected to turn north to north-northeast toward southern Japan. PAGASA said the storm may exit PAR within the day.
Despite its distance, the typhoon continues to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing strong to gale-force winds and heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.
By Tuesday, affected areas will include Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. Similar conditions may persist Wednesday over parts of Northern and Central Luzon and nearby regions.
PAGASA advised the public that hazardous weather conditions may also occur outside the forecast track.
At sea, rough conditions are forecast over several northern and eastern seaboards. Waves may reach up to 3.5 meters along the eastern coast of Batanes and up to 3 meters along the seaboards of mainland Cagayan, Isabela and parts of the Babuyan Islands.
Moderate seas are expected in other coastal areas, with wave heights of up to 2.5 meters in parts of Aurora, Polillo Islands and Catanduanes, and up to 2 meters in sections of Ilocos Norte, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar and Sorsogon.
Authorities warned small water vehicle operators, including motorbanca, against venturing out to sea under rough conditions, especially if vessels are not adequately equipped.
PAGASA said Domeng has likely reached its peak intensity and is expected to maintain its strength while passing over Okinawa before gradually weakening.
