Two people were killed while another survived after a landslide buried a bulalo eatery in La Trinidad, Benguet, on Thursday morning, August 6, amid continuous heavy rains brought by Tropical Depression Maymay and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon or habagat.

Based on initial reports, the landslide occurred at around 8 a.m., burying part of the eatery while several people were inside, according to an MBC TV Network News report by RH Romy Gonzales.

Authorities said seven individuals were inside the establishment when the landslide occurred. Four managed to escape safely, while three were trapped under the debris.

Rescue teams from various emergency response groups in La Trinidad immediately launched search and rescue operations.

One of the three trapped individuals was rescued alive at around 10 a.m. and rushed to a hospital for treatment. The two other victims were later recovered and declared dead at the scene, La Trinidad Mayor Roderick Awingan confirmed.

The fatalities were identified as residents of Kapangan, Benguet, who were working in Shilan, La Trinidad.

Awingan said the landslide was caused by continuous heavy rainfall that softened the soil, leading to the collapse of the slope.

Authorities continue to monitor the area for possible secondary landslides as heavy rains persist due to Tropical Storm Maymay and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon.

Authorities have also ordered the evacuation of residents in nearby areas as the soil remains saturated and unstable, posing a continuing landslide risk. Residents in landslide-prone communities have been advised to remain alert and follow evacuation orders issued by local officials.
