Senator Erwin Tulfo questioned whether some Philippine officials and groups supporting their views on social media are emboldening China amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
During a discussion with Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Tulfo raised concerns that some officials were allegedly blaming the Philippines for the maritime disputes, potentially reinforcing China’s position.
“Would you agree with me, Sir, na kumukuha ng lakas ng loob itong China because there are some officials of this land—they’re saying na parang tayo pa ang may kasalanan and then suportado sila ng grupo, probably grupo ng mga trolls?” Tulfo asked.
Teodoro acknowledged that this could be one of the factors contributing to China’s assertiveness, pointing to the risks posed by internal divisions.
“That could be one of the reasons,” the defense chief replied.
“Kasi the best way to weaken your enemy is to foment internal dissension in an area which you want to compromise or to co-opt,” Teodoro added.
Tulfo also challenged concerns that standing up to China could trigger a military attack, emphasizing the distinction between defending the country’s maritime rights and initiating a conflict.
His remarks underscored concerns that divisions within the Philippines could weaken the country’s position as it asserts its sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.
