MANILA, Philippines – President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the nomination of Florida businessman Lee Lipton as the United States’ new Ambassador to the Philippines.
According to the U.S. State Department, Trump officially sent Lipton’s nomination to the Senate.
Lipton, who has yet to undergo Senate confirmation proceedings, currently serves as the Interim Permanent Representative to the United States Mission to the Organization of American States, where he manages staff operations, financial resources, and interagency coordination to advance U.S. foreign policy priorities in the Western Hemisphere.
“In this role, he supports U.S. engagement on a range of regional challenges, including the deteriorating security situation in Haiti, and efforts to counter malign influence—particularly from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)—within the Inter-American System,” Lipton’s biography on the State Department’s website stated.

Before entering public service, Lipton has worked in the private sector for 25 years, particularly in the apparel industry, where he “oversaw the design, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of licensed collections for globally recognized brands such as Calvin Klein, St. John Knits, and Guess.”
He transitioned into the hospitality industry, owning several oceanfront restaurants, including landmark restaurants as among the “highest-volume establishments” in Palm Beach County, FL.
Lipton holds a bachelor’s degree from Bryant University and has two sons with his wife of 45 years.
He will succeed MaryKay Carlson, who served as the United States’ envoy to Manila since July 2022.
Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez welcomed Lipton’s appointment, reflecting the “importance” of the Philippines to the U.S. President.
"Trump sees the Philippines as important to him personally," Romualdez told the media, as Lipton is considered “a very close friend” of the President.
The Philippines is one of the closest allies and partners of the United States in the region, with ongoing economic, defense and humanitarian cooperation spanning many U.S. administrations, including the recent Biden and the current Trump administration.
