A truck loaded with softdrinks overturned along the northbound lane of C5 in Taguig City early Monday morning, April 27, spilling thousands of cases onto the road and prompting nearby residents to rush to the area.
According to personnel from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the wing van truck was overloaded, causing its center vault to give way and leading to the accident.
Authorities said the truck was carrying around 1,300 cases of softdrinks when it toppled over. The vehicle reportedly came from Santo Tomas, Batangas and was en route to Quezon City when it encountered mechanical trouble.
As news of the spill spread, residents living near the area quickly arrived at the scene, bringing sacks and grabbing loose bottles of softdrinks scattered along the road.
Some residents said they intended to consume the recovered drinks as relief from the intense summer heat. The softdrinks were reportedly intended for delivery and not for sale to the public.
In an interview with DZRH News, 49-year-old helper Rodney said they were unable to control the situation as many people began taking the softdrinks due to the sheer number of those who responded.
The MMDA noted that the driver and helper of the truck are both safe. The vehicle has since been towed from the scene as clearing operations continue.
