The trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is expected to bring rain to parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
“‘Yung kanyang trough o extension ang nakakapekto sa may silangang bahagi ng Visayas. Kaya asahan nga natin yung maulang panahon mostly silangang bahagi ng Visayas pati na rin sa may silangang bahagi ng Mindanao areas,” weather specialist Veronica Torres said.
In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin, the state weather bureau said residents in eastern Visayas and eastern Mindanao, particularly Caraga and Davao Oriental, can expect cloudy skies and scattered rain showers, thunderstorms, and occasional gusty winds.
PAGASA said the LPA was estimated to be 1,795 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas as of 3 a.m. The weather disturbance has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours and may enter the PAR in the coming days.
However, Torres said the LPA is not expected to directly affect any part of the country in the next two to three days.
If the system develops into a tropical cyclone while inside the PAR, it will be given the local name “Queenie.”
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with a chance of localized thunderstorms.
Torres said similar weather conditions may persist across Luzon over the next three to five days, although thunderstorms may still develop in some areas.
For the Visayas and Mindanao, partly cloudy to cloudy skies and localized thunderstorms are expected in areas not directly affected by the LPA’s trough.
The trough is expected to continue bringing rain over the southern portions of the Visayas and eastern Mindanao on Wednesday.
By Thursday and Friday, more areas in Mindanao, including its western and eastern sections, may experience rainy weather. Rainy conditions may persist over western Mindanao by Saturday.
PAGASA reminded the public that the three- to five-day forecast may still change and advised residents to monitor the agency’s latest weather updates.
