Tropical Depression Salome has slightly weakened as it continues to move southwestward over the Balintang Channel, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported at 11:00 AM.
As per the latest update, the center of Salome was estimated at 115 kilometers northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h. It is currently moving southwestward at 20 km/h.
According to PAGASA, strong winds extend up to 200 kilometers from the center of the tropical depression.
Signal No. 1 Up in Northern Luzon
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 remains hoisted over the following areas:
-
Batanes
-
Northern and western portions of the Babuyan Islands (Calayan, Dalupiri, and Babuyan Islands)
-
Northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte (Bangui, Pagudpud, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, and Laoag City)
These areas may experience strong winds of 39 to 61 km/h and minimal to minor threats to life and property.
Salome is expected to continue moving southwestward due to a High-Pressure Area over mainland China. It may pass close to Ilocos Norte by this afternoon before further weakening into a remnant low due to unfavorable atmospheric conditions.
Authorities urged residents, particularly those in flood- and landslide-prone areas, to stay alert and follow instructions from local disaster officials.
