Former senator Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes IV on Thursday confirmed that he will no longer pursue a return to the Senate, choosing instead to focus his efforts on supporting other candidates in the 2028 elections.
In an interview on DZRH's Damdaming Bayan, Trillanes said he believes his role is better suited behind the scenes, helping strengthen campaigns and advocating for leaders aligned with his principles.
He emphasized that every decision made today will have a significant impact on the country’s future.
“Hindi na po. Tayo ay magsusupport na lang, kasi importante ito [2028 elections],” he said.
Trillanes, who served as a senator of the Philippines for 12 years from June 2007 to June 2019, said he believes he can make a greater impact by working behind the scenes to help ensure the success of candidates committed to good governance.
The former lawmaker emphasized the importance of the upcoming electoral cycle, particularly in the lead-up to the 2028 presidential elections, which he described as a critical turning point for the nation.
According to him, the stakes are too high to risk errors in the electoral process.
He stressed the need for a credible, transparent, and reliable election system, noting that ensuring the integrity of the vote will be their primary focus moving forward.
“Ang darating na halalan, nakapa-importanteng yugto ng bansa natin ito. Kailangan hindi po tayo magkamali,” he added.
Trillanes recently attempted a political comeback at the local level but lost his bid for the mayoral seat in Caloocan City.
Despite this setback, he reaffirmed his commitment to remain active in the political landscape, this time through supporting reform-oriented candidates and advocating for credible and transparent elections.
