Mounds of garbage reportedly washed ashore and accumulated along the Manila Bay Dolomite Beach on Monday following heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or “habagat.”

Despite the rain easing around midday, a new concern emerged along the stretch of Roxas Boulevard as large piles of debris were seen scattered across the shoreline.

According to a report by RH Tina Nolasco, the beach remains closed to tourists, with the public barred from entering the facility. However, the extent of the trash buildup was visible from a nearby footbridge overlooking the area.

Authorities said most of the waste came from nearby esteros and residential areas, carried by floodwaters during the recent downpour.

Cleanup operations are expected to begin once weather conditions stabilize and it is safe for personnel to remove the debris.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes and Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Director Arnel Angeles inspected a mobile pumping station near Plaza Rajah Sulayman along the Roxas Boulevard service road. The equipment is expected to help drain floodwaters in the area.

As of 1 p.m., flooding had subsided in parts of Taft Avenue in Manila. Authorities estimated that gutter-deep floods in several areas across Metro Manila lasted for about two hours.
