The House prosecution panel for the Senate impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte said it was much too early to proclaim their loss and the Defense, Duterte’s camp, the victors of the trial.

During a Monday press conference, lead prosecutor and Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville Luistro said that, rather than viewing the first day of the highly-anticipated trial as a loss, the panel is “very much happy” and claims the victory of having actualized the trial.

“Hindi po kami talo, as a matter of fact, very much happy because the impeachment trial is happening now. That is the most important part of what happened today. We were able to witness na nangyayari na kung ano ang mandato ng Constitution. And we claim that as a victory for the prosecution,” she said.

Moreover, Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno said it was too early to tell who won or lost, as the trial discussions on this first day centered on preliminary matters.

“Masyado pong maaga na magsalita ng kung sinong nanalo o natalo. This is only the first day of the trial at ‘yung mga napag-usapan ay mga preliminary matters pa lang. Ang importante at ang panawagan natin sa lahat ay tingnan natin at suriin natin ‘yung ebidensya na mailalatag sa darating pa na araw at linggo,” Diokno urged the public.

Panel Spokesperson and former lawmaker Robert Ace Barbers pointed out that the trial has only just begun—and in spite of the narratives doubting the execution of the trial.

“To allay the notion that ang nanalo o natalo ang prosecution ay mali po iyon. Dahil ang nangyari po ngayong araw na ito, ay nakita naman natin, na nag-umpisa ang trial,” Barbers said.

The impeachment trial will resume on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
