The Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Santo Niño in Tondo, Manila has received a historic recognition from the Vatican, as Pope Leo XIV raised it to the status of Minor Basilica.
The decree was issued on November 9, 2025, coinciding with the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
The Archdiocese of Manila announced that the official celebration marking the church’s new title will be scheduled and revealed in the near future.
Founded in 1572, the Santo Niño Parish—commonly known as Tondo Church—stands as one of Manila’s oldest religious landmarks. Its elevation to a Minor Basilica honors its centuries-long spiritual significance, its role in the devotion to the Santo Niño, and its contribution to the religious life of the local community.
Church officials said the recognition affirms Tondo Church’s historical and cultural importance, granting it certain liturgical privileges and a higher standing within the Roman Catholic Church.
